A starving dog, found wandering the streets of Chicago, Illinois, has been taken in by a charity that calls his case one of the worst cases of abuse it has ever seen. On Monday morning, the Trio Animal Foundation (TAF) introduced its Facebook followers to the sick dog nicknamed "Augustus".
The organization claimed that a good Samaritan noticed the emaciated dog and called the police for help; The authorities contacted TAF and rescue efforts were quickly launched. The organization stated: “It wasn't long before TAF was contacted and our friend Frank dropped everything to go pick up Augustus. When Frank pulled Augustus out of his car at the vet's emergency room, he had to do everything he could not to burst into tears. In his arms was a defeated dog that seemed to be hanging on for dear life… The abuse this dog had suffered was unfathomable.”
TAF described Augustus' pitiful condition: “pieces of hair and skin fell off as we walked through the front door of the emergency room. Augustus's head was sunken in, he had large, deep wounds that were dripping with blood, and his bones were pressing so hard against his skin that it seemed as if they were going to break through his flesh. With such severe muscle atrophy and starvation, Augustus looked like a skeleton.”
Augustus is currently being treated in the intensive care unit of the veterinary hospital; Preliminary results of his blood tests show that he suffers from infections and severe anemia. He is so emaciated that he is at risk of organ failure.
Please keep this sick dog in mind: People interested in helping TAF fund Augustus' veterinary expenses can make a donation on their website (please indicate the donation is for Augustus).
